The big 3 of mens Jewellery

mens omega watch

When men are looking to accessorise, its important that it is done tastefully and elegantly. Nothing looks worse than an overdone businessman, a try hard who thinks “the more gold I wear, the cooler I’ll look”

Unfortunately nothing could be further from the truth. There are 3 items that a man should always wear in the corporate world, and its so incredibly easy to pull off.

The Watch

The number 1 item that a guy should wear is the humble wrist watch. For years naysayers have been calling for the end of the wrist watch because a mobile phone will tell the time more accurately. However nothing completes the look of a well tailored suit like an elegant watch. A watch catches peoples eyes and captures their imagination. Watches are such a personal choice that its one way that men can express their personality so emphatically. Big and brash, or understated and classy – you can get an immediate insight to someones personality just by glancing at what’s on their wrist.

And you don’t have to pay thousands of dollars for a high performing watch either. Companies like Steinhart, Citizen, Tissot and even Seiko produce stunningly reliable and elegant watches. Heck you can even buy a Replica that most people can’t tell the difference. But if you buy a replica Rolex and drive a 20 year old commodore, people will call bullshit.

mens omega watch

Actor Daniel Craig wore an Omega 2220.80 Seamaster watch with co-axial movement as James Bond in the Eon Productions film “Casino Royale” (2006).

The Ring

Similar to a watch, a ring is a very personal item that a man can wear to express his personality. The great thing about rings are that they come in such a broad range of colours, materials and designs. Big, black and loaded with diamonds, or a simple Titanium wedding band, and everything in between. We find that there is such a wide range of products that people are interested in, and thats great because it shows guys are getting exactly what THEY want, not what the masses want.

mens titanium wedding band

The Tie Bar

The last item that every business man should wear every day is the tie bar. There isn’t a lot of worse fashion looks than a poorly done half windsor above a crooked tie. There’s no need for either. There are a million sites out there to help you tie your tie properly, and equally as many that you can buy a tie bar from. Tie bars come in pretty much any shape or size that you can imagine, and they do as advertised – keep your tie straight.

So it doesn’t take a heck of a lot to accessorise for your business day. Buying the above items could cost anything really. You could get a quality watch, ring and tie bar for under a thousand, or it could cost $50,000. But either way, nothing completes a look like a quality Watch, ring and tie bar..

Rings make great Valentines day gifts!!

mens ring valentines day

Here at Alpha Rings, our amazing customers choose our products all year round. There really isn’t any one time of year that is stronger than any other. One area where we are noticing that we are always busy however, is around Valentines day. Valentines day has traditionally never been a huge market for us, but now as clients become more and more aware of the versatility of contemporary metal rings, men and women are really taking to the idea of a ring for a gift.

Cobalt ring valentines day

Cobalt Rings are in demand all year round, and most certainly on Valentines day

Less expensive rings are in vogue at this time of year, so particularly plain tungsten or Cobalt rings are in demand. I think that is because when people are buying gifts, they aren’t sure exactly what their partner might like and therefore they don’t want to waste too much money on a purchase that isn’t perfect! So we don’t seem to see many Black Titanium and diamond rings being picked up at this time of year!!!

Mens Valentines day fashion rings

Wood grain rings have been particularly popular this Valentines day

One other great thing about the products we sell is that they are reasonably priced so it is not an insane investment to buy a product from Alpha Rings. Couple that with the fact that we have a great return and warranty program and you can be confident that your purchase is supported by reliable Australian family values that want to see you happy!

If you’d like to purchase a fashion ring for valentines day, Tungsten Rings are a great place to start!

Timoku Titanium Rings back in production!!

mens titanium ring

Great news for all our Australian customers, Edward Mirell have recommenced production of their world famous, one of a kind Timoku products.

There is no other product like Edward Mirell Timoku anywhere in the world. Reason being that Edward Mirell are the only makers of true Black Titanium, owning the patent on this product.

Titanium ring australia

The Timoku pattern comes from combining Black and Grey Titanium, joining them together , then twisting and hammering the two metals. A Ring blank is then cut, whereupon the final product can be made.

Many of our customers have enjoyed the incredible Timoku ring – most often for a wedding ring, although we have supplied the occasional Timoku for a fashion ring.

My personal favourite is the incredible Bevelled ring. Having seen it a number of times it really is quite incredible, with amazing pattern of the Timoku framed by the Grey Titanium bevelled edge. Every customer that has bought it has always commented on how incredible it looks.

$9.90 cobalt rings, don’t bother!

The other day whilst checking out what our competitors were doing, I came across a website that had the cheapest rings I’d ever seen. So as most organisations do, we purchased one to do some market research. What I discovered was both sad and disappointing really. Alpha Rings prides itself on providing customers with exceptional quality products at fair prices.

Unfortunately not everyone shares that same philosophy. The ring we purchased was absolute crap. I could tell that there was an unusual hue to the ring, only very subtle, but noticeable to someone that had been in the industry for a significant period of time. When I wore the ring, it left a grey mark on my finger when I was sweating. We also subjected the ring to an impact test. It performed horrendously.

You simply can’t make and sell a cobalt ring for under $1o if it is a quality product – its simply not possible. When making rings, there are a number of trace elements that need to be part of the process so that the colour and hardness is exactly as it needs to be. Some manufacturers will cut corners however.

Some types of rings (tungsten is the perfect example) use binding agents in the process. Very cheap rings use cobalt which should not be used for this purpose (cobalt is fine as a co-chr-mo ring). Some retailers advertise “cobalt free” tungsten rings, but that doesn’t tell the full store. The binding agent they use can leach out into your skin with is quite unhealthy. Our rings have passed Nickel release tests which means an unacceptable level of Nickel does NOT leach out.

Online marketplaces such as ebay and amazon are absolutely flooded with what can only be described as waste product masquerading as quality jewellery. Please do some research on your product before you make a purchase where the price seems too low to be true. If it costs about as much as a beer, then I wouldn’t want it on my finger, heaven knows what you might be purchasing.

How to choose a mens wedding ring

Titanium Black Ring edward mirell

Choosing a wedding ring for a man in Australia is rather different than most other countries around the world. Due to our geographic sparsity, shoppers just don’t get the opportunity to look at as many retail outlets as is the case for say, Americans or the Brits. And unfortunately when you get to a retail shop, the big outlets just don’t have a wide range of stock for men to choose from. Simply put, retailers most of the time don’t make enough money off mens jewellery compared to ladies. Its just simple economics really.

The good news is for men that the internet age has brought an enormous array of products to their fingertips. Men can now choose pretty much any product they want, and get it delivered to them, which is awesome.

So with all that choice now presented to us, how do we go about choosing that perfect ring that shows our personality and speaks of the love we have for our life partner? From our years of dealing with people getting married, here is a list of common points of interest that come up time and again. Hopefully this helps you to make informed choices for your amazing day. Some points might be irrelevant to you, some might really be close to home.

Do it early

I can’t tell you guys this enough. Its really really important to get the ball rolling nice and early. I have seriously had people ring me up a week before to get something custom made – it just can’t be done! If you are lucky enough that the product you want is in stock with a retailer, you still need to allow enough time in case the ring isn’t the right size, or even worse, that the ring is lost or damaged in the mail.

I’d suggest you start checking out stores and the internet a good 6 months before the wedding date. You need to make sure you’ve seen enough products so you’re quite sure of what you’re after.

Please leave at least 2 months before you make your choice of ring and go to make the purchase. This gives the retailer enough time to get it made if it is not in stock, and gives plenty of time to make sure the size is right. Inside 2 months, and the pressure is on the retailer to make sure it is spot on. And while most retailers can ensure that this will happen – what happens if your jeweller gets it wrong?

So best to leave as much time as possible. Please don’t leave your ring purchase to the last minute. It puts heaps of strain on the relationship as often (from experience) the partner needs to sort it out. Not cool!

Contemporary or Traditional materials?

We’ve talked about this to death in various other posts but the reality is that its probably one of the most controversial points in choosing a mens wedding ring. There are just so many choices it is beyond belief these days. Whilst many people enjoy the traditional metals such as Gold, Silver and Platinum, there are so many other great materials now to make rings out of including Cobalt, Tungsten and Titanium.  Its pretty obvious that Alpha Rings prefers modern day metals such as the later due to the cost vs benefit aspect. And the reality is that contemporary metals are so accepted now that the growth in the market paints a compelling tale of the popularity of these metals.

Its a bit like the transition in photography from film to digital. People fought digital and beat the product down, but digital has long since been a superior product to film that no one even bats an eyelid to it now. The same is true in the argument of contemporary metals vs traditional metals. Really, in my opinion, the only benefit that traditional metals have for a wedding ring is the “status” of a gold or platinum ring.

In almost every other aspect, contemporary metals out perform, and are far cheaper than Gold and Silver in particular.

Contemporary metal benefits: cheaper, harder, more scratch resistant, often lighter, don’t deform, incredible design possibilities.

Traditional metal benefits: Some people like the concept, uses precious metals.

Getting your size right.

Unfortunately, there really isn’t a perfect ring size for me. Our fingers swell and shrink with the weather and thats a fact of life. In fact my “perfect” size is 8.5, but in winter I can wear a size 8, and in summer I can wear a size 9. So that is one full size in fluctuation!

Not only that, but some men have bony knuckles, with not much meat on their fingers. This means that they need a ring big enough to get over the knuckle, but then it will be quite loose once it’s over the knuckle. This is one of those unfortunate facts of life – there just isn’t a way around it. You should try and get a ring small enough that you can just get it over your knuckle, even if it is tight to get off. You can always use soapy water on your hand and twist the ring off. Its better this way than the ring flopping around all day!

Other men have more meat between their knuckles. the challenge here is that their finger can swell in the heat and subside in the cooler months. You probably need to make your research over a longer period. See if you can try what you THINK is your size, but over different climatic conditions. Try it in the heat and try it in the cool. This is the only way that you are going to be able to see if it is indeed the right size or not. Thats where Alpha Rings ring sizing comes in handy. We can really help you take out a lot of the guess work with sizing.

You also need to make sure that you are sizing on a ring with the correct width. There is no point sizing your finger on a 2mm band if you intend to get a 10mm band as the geometry of the ring will be entirely different!

Ring Width

Width is an often overlooked issue when it comes to choosing the mans wedding ring. I believe that 8mm has become the norm for most men when buying a ring, based on experience and what our clients tell us. However, this can also change depending on the size.

For example, a smaller individual with small fingers who chooses a small size, will not necessarily want an 8mm ring. For example, if you are a size 7.5, then an 8mm ring will look disproportionally fat, compared to someone who has a size 10 finger. And a person who is a size 13 might think that 8mm is actually a touch thin, and may want to go up to a 9 or 10mm ring.

You want your ring to look good! So have a good look around and see what width suits you best.

8mm is fantastic for people with “standard size” fingers. People with smaller fingers may want a 6mm ring, and people with really big fingers may want to look at 10mm rings.

Ring Design

This is a huge topic in and of itself. There is just so much range and style variation now that you really should just look at google images for hours on end until you see something you like – thats really the best way to get a handle on whats out there. You will find that going into shops you’ll start to see the same thing repeated pretty quickly.

There are no rules for wedding rings anymore. The old rules that thou shalt buy a gold domed band is well and truly of a bygone era. You can even get rings designed yourself these days, should you be willing to spend enough.

Regarding ring design, the only suggestions I would have is the following

– Is this more of a “fashion ring”, i.e., perhaps cheaper, made of something like steel, or wood, might not last or “novelty” and

– Make sure your spouse is ok with it!!! Its going to be in the wedding photo’s and its going to be shown to your friends and relatives for a while, so please don’t buy something that your partner shudders at the site of. I’ve seen this happen.

Ring Features

The world is your oyster now days when it comes to features of a ring. If you want intricate work on your ring, then Tungsten, Silver and Gold are not the best options. These products are too hard or too soft to be able to handle amazing shapes. Tungsten can handle a simple inlay of precious metals such as Silver and Gold, but it can’t be too much more adventurous than that.

Titanium or Black Titanium are the products of choice if you are wanting intricate designs for your ring. These materials have an almost perfect profile to allow machinists to create amazing and intricate patterns and shapes.

Diamonds, or other stones can be set in most materials.

How much punishment will the ring get/lifestyle?

Different people will wear their wedding rings at different times. Tradespeople might only ever wear their wedding ring when they go out on the weekend. Other people have office jobs. In both cases, the ring will not cop a lot of punishment so the ring will most likely hold up better for longer. If this is you, then you can choose from a wider range of rings with a wider range of properties, such as varied ductility and malleability (which ultimately means how much the ring will bend, warp and scratch)

If you are a person that will will wear your ring 24/7, then you really need to have a good hard think about what product you are going to use. Similarly, if you will wear your ring whilst doing any sort of manual labour, then the ring will be under much more stress than the office worker.  If this is you, then products like Tungsten Carbide or Cobalt instantly stand out as more solid options because they are so hard. But don’t believe the hype! No ring is perfect or indestructible. Each material has its positives and negatives, so make sure you email or call someone with industry knowledge to find out if the product is going to work for you.

Typically, Titanium, Platinum, Tungsten and Cobalt can handle more than Gold and Silver. Gold and Silver will scratch even if you have a desk job. Silver will probably scratch the first day you wear it. Thats ok, you can get it buffed – but is that something you are prepared to do?

Cost

Cost is a consideration with every purchase that we make. So, not only does it come into the equation when choosing what material you want, but it also comes into the equation when trying to get a good deal on that product. Gold remains popular as a product, but its popularity has dipped over the last decade due to cheaper and more versatile options. That means people have a much bigger range of products from a financial point of view to choose from. No longer does buying a wedding ring need to break the bank.

When it comes to getting a good deal, you need to do your due diligence on your product of choice. You need to make sure you are getting good bang for your buck. Try and do some research on the product, where does it come from, does the retailer actually understand the manufacturing process? I would hope so.

It is a fact that online stores have lower overheads than shopfronts. Online stores just don’t have the same expenses such as wages, commissions, rent and others. This means that online stores can produce a similar quality product (or better), at a fraction of the cost.

Choosing a respected retailer

This is true for any product you purchase, not just wedding jewellery. Look to see how long the organisation has been in business for. Do they have an address? What country do they operate out of? Do they accept Paypal which gives buyer protection? Have you heard anything about the company through word of mouth? Are there good or bad online reviews?

Don’t just trust “customer feedback” on the companies own homepage. Unfortunately these can be manipulated to show only good review – or worse, they might even be entirely fictional.

Clearly shopfronts have an advantage here in that you can actually go and meet with someone to discuss your ring.

Two of the most important things when choosing someone to buy a ring off, is their warranty policy, and their knowledge. If you buy a ring and something happens to it – will the retailer do anything to fix it? Thats really really important. Make sure you ask and understand the warranty policy.

Product knowledge is critical. When you are talking to someone about a purchase, don’t settle for wishy washy statements such as “I think so”, or “it should be ok”, or “I’m not really sure”. The person you buy the ring off should be able to confidently answer any question that you throw at them. If not, I’d be concerned they are just trying to “sell” you, that they really don’t care for your big day at all.

So there you have it – our comprehensive guide to choosing a mens wedding ring. Do it early and do it right. It will hopefully be on your finger for a long long time so make sure you do some research, and importantly, buy with your head as well as with your heart!

Good luck!

Why buy a Cobalt ring?

Being in the wedding ring game for quite some time, we’ve seen all sorts of trends come and go. We’ve also seen new products come into the market that have really added to the product suite that men have to choose from. Cobalt is one of those such products.

Cobalt rings are a relatively recent innovation, created by some of the worlds top designers and metallurgists searching for a product with lots of upside and reducing the floors of the product. Cobalt was created to have a similar appearance to Platinum, with its brilliant “white” lustre. However, in our opinion, Cobalt is a far superior product for jewellery than Platinium. The only place that Platinum has it covered is the “status” of Platinum.

cobalt wedding ring

Cobalt Rings are made by combining Cobalt, Chrium and Molybdenum as well as other trace materials.

Some of the benefits of Cobalt Rings include

– Hardness & scratch resistance. Cobalt is around 3 times harder than Platinum. The result is that it is an extremely durable product that is highly scratch resistant. I have worn Cobalt as my ring of choice for many years, and whilst the product does scratch – the scratches are very fine. You need to look closely to see the scratches. Its not like Gold, Silver or Platinum that have massive scratches all over the ring really quickly. Also, even though the product is hard, it is not so hard that it becomes brittle, which is really important. Its less hard than Tungsten and is more malleable so it is less prone to cracking.

– Brilliant white Hue. One of the best attributes Cobalt has is its wonderful colour. It is a very “white” colour which is stunning when either polished or brushed. Of all the products we sell, it is Cobalt that really lights up a clients face when they see their ring come out. It catches the light beautifully well. The one downfall of this colour is that Cobalt is near on impossible to photograph properly. Its really hard to capture the true colour and reflection properly.

Cobalt ring combined with ceramic. Precision engineering - available at Alpha Rings

Cobalt ring combined with ceramic. Precision engineering – available at Alpha Rings

– Price. Compared to precious metal jewellery, it is very inexpensive. Most Cobalt rings can be purchased for less than $300 which is an absolute steal for the product that you are getting. Its certainly more expensive than both Titanium and Tungsten, but it is a different product. Titanium is more versatile so more can be done with it. The machining of Cobalt probably produces an end result closer to Tungsten because of its hardness.

Cobalt fashion ring

Not all Cobalt rings are made equally though. Because Cobalt rings are made with a bunch of different materials, some manufacturers can use cheaper products in higher proportions which compromises both the scratch resistance and the “cracking” resistance of the products. Cobalt products made by Alpha Rings are of the highest possible quality, so whilst we won’t claim that your Cobalt product will never scratch (if you find a retailer that does, I would suggest you be very concerned about buying from them), it will be as high a quality as you will find anywhere. Popular mens rings in 2014

blue and silver ring

Sometimes people contact us because they know they want a ring of some description but they’re just not sure exactly what to go for. There are a lot of guys out there that haven’t yet developed a personal taste of their own. Sure they might know what looks good but they really don’t know if its cool or popular, and don’t want to part with their hard earned cash if they think their mates will think its crap.

So one of the questions we get asked quite a lot is “what are your most popular rings for men.” That is a question that gets a different answer depending on what time of the year it’s asked. But 2014 has been a little bit unique in that there has been quite a theme running through the popularity of our products.

We have seen a big growth in the interest in the more contemporary designs. So there has been a leaning towards more of the plain varieties of titanium and tungsten, which we’ll show you below.

The big drop off in 2014 was the interest in Silver inlaid rings. Our amazing customers really didn’t take these up, which is surprising because 2013 was quite big for Silver inlaid products.

So although we can’t necessarily influence a persons style to a great degree, we can tell you what is hot at the moment. Below is a list of some of the most popular rings we sold in 2014, which as we’ve said, are all very plain and traditional in their style. Thats not to say we didn’t sell lots of other rings. The great thing about Alpha Rings is that there is such a diverse range that people are always going to find something they like!

Hottest mens fashion rings of Winter 2014

With winter well and truly upon us, it often makes for a subtle change in the products that our customers purchase from us. This season, the more popular rings have been the simpler style of rings, not necessarily having any inlays or intricate work on them.  Below are some of the products which have been really popular over the last 6 weeks!

cobalt ring bevelled

The Cobalt products continue to be popular because of their brilliant colour tone. The plain beveled Cobalt ring combines a matte, brushed face with polished edges. Cobalt’s distinct “whiteness” never fails to impress when people get their hands on it.

Tungsten-Bevelled-Ring2-90x90

The Brushed, beveled Tungsen ring offers great value when purchased through Alpha Rings. This product is different to the Cobalt product because it is heavier, greyer, harder and cheaper. This means that it will be more scratch resistant, but it is slightly more brittle. It is very important to buy high quality Tungsten. Much of the Tungsten product bought on the internet contains cobalt as a binding agent which is not ideal.

edward-mirell_gray-titanium-ring-milgraine

Edward Mirell’s titanium products are perennial best sellers. Owing to their unparallelled quality and the methods in which they are manufactured, these products are at the top of the tree when it comes to contemporary metals. The quality of titanium products varies enormously, however you can be assured of a great product when you buy Edward Mirell.

So its definitely been the simpler products this season which have captured the imagination of our clients season. But thats the beauty of shopping at Alpha Rings, there is a product to suit just about anyone.

Edward Mirell Guardian Collection

One of Edward Mirell’s most exciting new ventures has been its unique “Guardian” collection. Edward Mirell has kept this collection very tight, preferring to produce a limited number of designs, but placing a great deal of emphasis on the the appearance of each piece.

In fact, currently there are only 4 products in this current collection, which has fluctuated as the company refines its outstanding, world class catalogue.

At the center of its collection, as always are the rings. The first ring is considered to be one of Edward Mirell’s finest signet rings. Made of high quality Lapis that have an incredible bright blue appearance, it has a Sterling Silver setting which is in turn set in a base of high grade CP grey titanium

Titanium and Lapis mens ring

The intricate work in this ring is clearly visible even from a photograph. True to the Edward Mirell theme, not a detail has been missed. The accenting and highlighting is done by alternating polished and brushed titanium.

The next ring in the collection is a more aggressive look than the Lapis ring. This one features Dia Carnelian which is bright red in appearance against stark Black Titanium. The stone is once again set into Sterling Silver.

849_black-ti-sterling-silver-guardian-08-ctw-dia-carnelian-signet-ring_edward-mirell_r3505o-d1008_l

As one can see from the pictures, this ring is very bold and encaptulates old world charm with modern manufacturing technologies. The Dia Carnelian ring is a great choice for someone looking for an old world gothic ring. Whilst not typical of a wedding ring, for a fashion ring – this one certainly fits the bill.

Are ceramic rings dead?

black ceramic ring

Ceramic rings became extremely popular in the last decade or so. The reason for this is that they offered a new way to introduce permanency to the colour of mens and womens fashion rings. Stainless steel was able to be used and was subjected to coatings such as PVD (physical vapor deposition) where the ring was subjected to high temperatures and pressures to add a certain coating. Other types of coatings were things like enamels which were “painted” on. The end result is that there was a product that could be manufactured cheaply, with bright colours and patterns, but at the expense of long term quality and durability.

steel rings

steel and enamel ring

Enter Ceramic rings. Ceramic rings solved some of the problems that were around with steel rings.

Advantages that Ceramic rings held over steel rings include

– They didnt need any type of coating

– The base was not a “Silver” colour, but any colour that the manufacturer wished

– Ceramics are harder  and less prone to scratching

– If it did scratch, it would scratch the same colour

– Stainless Steel rings, are overwhelmingly renound for lacking quality due to being soft – they scratch very easily and bend out of shape too easily. Much like gold, which is shocking for rings and really only used for the status. (Gold is great for accenting and inlaying however)

– A true black colour was achievable, which is very appealing to men.

Disadvantages

– Less intricate designs were possible.

– Lower malleability and ductility means less acute angles were possible so less variety of design

black ceramic ring

black ceramic ring

So whats the problem with Ceramic rings then?

Its not so much that ceramic rings are bad, its just that there are better products out there. The Edward Mirell black titanium product is superior to ceramic in every way. So the problem with Ceramic rings is that they have simply been superseded by a vastly superior product. Our customers also seem to know this, and that is why ceramic sales at Alpha Rings have plummeted, while Black Ti sales are on the way up.

Advantages Black Titanium has over Ceramic

– Incredibly versatile

– A staggering matrix of ductility, malleability, scratch resistance and ability to reflect light.

– Unique colour profile

– With the above characteristics is in no way physically inferior to ceramic

Disadvantages

– Much more expensive

black-titanium-koi-fish-ring

black ti Koi Fish – cutting edge engineering

Like most things in life, you pay for quality, and Black Titanium is without question more expensive than Ceramic. This tends to mean that retailers make lower margins on Black Titanium.  Black Titanium is not a marketing gimmick, far from it. Its an incredible product that Australian consumers now have the ability to take advantage of.  We still stock ceramic rings, because clients sometimes have an appeal to ceramic, and thats fine, however due to the nature of the product, there are far fewer choices in ceramic than black ti.

Alpha Rings has a great selection of black titanium rings or black ceramic rings right here
