The Bevelled Tungsten Ring

Sometimes partners want some input into what ring they should buy their partner as a surprise. They want some guidance as to what the most popular rings are. Enter the Bevelled Tungsten ring with no inlays.

This ring comes in with a few subtle variations. Firstly we make it in either a 6mm width or an 8mm width, and secondly it comes with a polished or brushed face. Overwhelmingly, the brushed face is the most popular, as it adds some nice contrast to the ring with the polished bevelled edging.

8mm Tungsten bevelled ring

The 8mm and 6mm versions are nearly equally popular, it really just depends on what the client is looking for. The 8mm version is quite heavy, weighing in at around 16gm. A similar Titanium Ring would weigh somewhere around 5gm.

This ring is a really good option for people who work outdoors and like to keep their ring on whilst at work. The reason for this is that there is no inlay to scratch, and its very difficult to scratch a plain Tungsten Band.

If you are intereted in these bands, the 8mm tungsten band can be found here, and here is the 6mm tungsten band!

Are ceramic rings dead?

black ceramic ring

Ceramic rings became extremely popular in the last decade or so. The reason for this is that they offered a new way to introduce permanency to the colour of mens and womens fashion rings. Stainless steel was able to be used and was subjected to coatings such as PVD (physical vapor deposition) where the ring was subjected to high temperatures and pressures to add a certain coating. Other types of coatings were things like enamels which were “painted” on. The end result is that there was a product that could be manufactured cheaply, with bright colours and patterns, but at the expense of long term quality and durability.

Enter Ceramic rings. Ceramic rings solved some of the problems that were around with steel rings.

Advantages that Ceramic rings held over steel rings include

– They didnt need any type of coating

– The base was not a “Silver” colour, but any colour that the manufacturer wished

– Ceramics are harder  and less prone to scratching

– If it did scratch, it would scratch the same colour

– Stainless Steel rings, are overwhelmingly renound for lacking quality due to being soft – they scratch very easily and bend out of shape too easily. Much like gold, which is shocking for rings and really only used for the status. (Gold is great for accenting and inlaying however)

– A true black colour was achievable, which is very appealing to men.

– Less intricate designs were possible.

– Lower malleability and ductility means less acute angles were possible so less variety of design

So whats the problem with Ceramic rings then?

Its not so much that ceramic rings are bad, its just that there are better products out there. The Edward Mirell black titanium product is superior to ceramic in every way. So the problem with Ceramic rings is that they have simply been superseded by a vastly superior product. Our customers also seem to know this, and that is why ceramic sales at Alpha Rings have plummeted, while Black Ti sales are on the way up.

Advantages Black Titanium has over Ceramic

– Incredibly versatile

– A staggering matrix of ductility, malleability, scratch resistance and ability to reflect light.

– Unique colour profile

– With the above characteristics is in no way physically inferior to ceramic

– Much more expensive

black ti Koi Fish – cutting edge engineering

Like most things in life, you pay for quality, and Black Titanium is without question more expensive than Ceramic. This tends to mean that retailers make lower margins on Black Titanium.  Black Titanium is not a marketing gimmick, far from it. Its an incredible product that Australian consumers now have the ability to take advantage of.  We still stock ceramic rings, because clients sometimes have an appeal to ceramic, and thats fine, however due to the nature of the product, there are far fewer choices in ceramic than black ti.

Alpha Rings has a great selection of black titanium rings or black ceramic rings right here

Wedding proposal ideas

Being in the business of wedding rings, you hear alot of stories about wedding proposals. Some of them are very ordinary, some of them are good, but there isnt enough of them that are great. A wedding proposal is one great chance to let your bride feel really special. What many guys forget though, is that it isnt just the night of the proposal that she feels special. She will (if things go well) recount this night to friends for the rest of your marriage. Hopefully, for all the right reasons. This post highlights some of the key considerations for that amazing day when the groom asks for his partners hand in marriage!

The vibe

If it doesnt feel right in the moment, dont do it. You need a plan B. Sometimes things happen that are our of our control. Perhaps your partner gets sick the day you plan to propose to her. Sure, its a hassle, you’re probably going to do a whole lot of planning and your going to blow some money, but do you want to propose while she’s crook as a dog? No way!

A mate of mine was going to propose to his wife down at one of the local beaches. It was an ok proposal idea from what I remember, he packed the boot with a picnic, and off he went. Two problems, he drove a crap car and chose the hottest day of the year. Car broke down, him and his girlfriend were pushing the car in 40 degree heat, and he still ended up proposing to her! Memorable, yes, for the right reasons, hell no!

Impromptu proposals can be exactly that, impromptu. But best not to do it, say “in the heat of a steamy moment”. Its really not a very flattering proposal.

A good wedding proposal takes time and efffort, no matter how you do it. Even if you are going to a cosy place in the hills, you still need to plan. You need to think about what your partner likes to eat, drink, how they like to relax. You certainly want to prepare how you are going to say it!

If you are dining out beforehand, you need plenty of time to book the restaurant.

Are you choosing a ring, or are you getting your partner to choose their own?

Are you getting someone to take photo’s – a friend or a professional?

What do they like to do?

This one is really important. If your partner doesn’t like sport, don’t take them to speedway or a game of footy to do it. Not cool and you wont be in the good books.

Some women actually hate being embarrassed. If that’s the case, don’t embarrass her.

As silly as it sounds, I know some ladies who don’t like surprises. Hate them. So tell her you are going to propose. Its ok to keep her guessing a little bit, maybe just don’t spring it right out of the blue.

If she loves flowers and gets stuck into you for never buying her flowers, then organize the biggest bunch of flowers she’s ever seen.

 Blow her away

If you are going to ask a woman to marry you, then you owe it to her to make it a night she will remember for the rest of her life. Really put in some effort

Watch this video, this is just awesome and encapsulates the effort that some men will go to – and I recon its amazing, the best proposal I’ve ever seen!

For my proposal, in brief, I ordered a limo, went to an amazing restaurant in the city, had a horse and cart pick us up and take us around the city, went to a beautiful park this some incredible architecture in the background. I had planned ahead and got a friend to put a card table in the middle of the park, with rose petals, wine, chocolates and a fortune cookie. I’d used tweezers to take out the note that was in there, and I replaced it with “will you marry me”.  The horse and cart pulled up next to the empty table in the middle of the park, I told her to sit down, got down on one knee, and gave her the fortune cookie! Once she said yes, we had a drink, got back on the horse and cart and rode around the city for a bit, ending up at a lovely hotel.

It was a great experience because it was on valentines day, love was in the air, and people were clapping as we went past. When we got out at the hotel, a woman got out of her partners Porsche, and said to her man “Hey! why didnt you get me one of those!!!”

I’m happy with my proposal because I planned it, and incorporated things that I knew she’d like. She felt really special, and it was great hearing her tell her friends what I did.

Things like Gondola rides, hot air ballons etc are great because they are slow, and it gives you time to create tension and atmosphere, and that is what women love. But all this takes planning, you cant just ass it on the night, you need to make an effort, and if you do, you will be very well rewarded!!

Oh and one other thing, DONT FORGET THE RING!!!!!!

burger rings, calamari rings and other assorted foods are not cool.

Spray on Skinny Jeans

Just when you thought jeans couldn’t possibly get any skinnier, they have. Last month, Topman released their new wave of skinny jeans, aptly called spray –on jeans. They retail at 65 Australian dollars. Apart from the fact that they’re limited to the quite slim and metrosexual amongst us, they’re really quite comfortable.

Yeah, I didn’t feel like my nuts were being squeezed to the point of bursting, or ascending to heights only reached during the bleakest of winters. There’s some confusion as to how they should be worn, so Topman’s started an incredibly catchy twitter campaign. They invite tweeters to share the way that they wear the jeans and they offer winners of the challenge Premium Spotify accounts.

Because of how skinny they are, and how chilled I am, I chose to wear mine underneath a pair of white Nike shorts, with Adidas runners/trainers/sneakers (I don’t really know what you call trainers down there, so I opted for a range of names. I suspect I got one of them right), and a white Ralph Lauren hoodie. I wasn’t going anywhere fancy.

Topman Spray on jeans: Suitable for: skinny teenagers and young adults with emo tendencies, those with some degree of fashion savvy; not Suitable for: Anyone who’s got a penchant for ale and may have developed a little bit of a beer belly over the years. Heed my warning, or you could end up looking like this.
